What exactly are these item stats?

I’m wondering what exactly the following item stats give to me?:

– Atk
– M-Atk
– Def
– M-Def
– Earth/Water/Fire/Air Attack

I would also like to know these things: for example, I want to deal more damage with Wind Beads to mobs. Which I should be looking for? The same situation, but only with DoomStorm or ChainChop.
On the contrary, what if I want to get less damage from mobs? :s
